Mary Martha (Spaulding) Maus, 94, Rochester and formerly Attica, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Wynnfield Crossing, Rochester.
Mary was born March 27, 1918 in Sharpsville. She was the daughter of the late Nathan Edgar and Emma (Nieman) Spaulding. Following her mother’s passing, Mary was raised by her uncle and aunt, Charles C. and Martha Spaulding, in Sharpsville. She was a graduate of Sharpsville High School in 1936. Mary met her future husband, Dale Maus, when he came to work for Shull Funeral Home in Sharpsville and they were married Feb. 28, 1937 in Sharpsville. Mary and Dale later moved to Goodland, and in 1941 moved to Attica, where Dale began working for DeSutter Funeral Home. She and her husband purchased L.C. Roemer & Son Funeral Home in June of 1971 and started what is now Maus Funeral Home. Dale preceded her in death Feb. 28, 1996.
Mary had worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Paul Sullivan in Attica. She later worked for Mavis Carney in the Sears Catalog Store in Attica. In her early life, she was a stay-at-home mother where she raised her three children. She was an excellent cook and great baker.
Mary was a member of the Attica First United Methodist Church. Mary was a former member of Attica Chapter 125 O.E.S., and she just recently received her 75-year pin for her membership in the Fern Chapter #194 Order of the Eastern Star. She had served as Deputy of District #16 O.E.S. for the State of Indiana, and also was selected to be Grand Representative to the State of Texas for O.E.S. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, and a retired member of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority in Attica.
Mary leaves behind three children, Linda L. (Robert) Haworth, Rochester, Vicki S. (Arpad) Vass, Lilburn, Ga., and Robert D. (Valarie) Maus, Attica; six grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Malone, Lora (Lee) White, Molly Vass, Ben Vass, Nathan Maus and Amy Maus; four great-grandchildren, Megan (Brandon) Miller, Morgan Malone, Matthew White and Wyatt Maus; a great-great-granddaughter, Jaclyn Leigh Miller; a special niece, Candi Crye, Ft. Myers, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Ford and Lou Spaulding; and her three sisters, Lula Henderson, Letha Wilburn and Ruth Scheiber.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica. O.E.S. services will be held at 7 p.m. by Fern Chapter #194. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with Pastor Janet Luchs officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
