Stephen F. Van Horn, 67, Kokomo, died at 4:04 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born Nov. 2, 1945, in Elwood, the son of Oscar F. and Gladys Pauline (Phifer) Van Horn. On Aug. 10, 1968, in Kokomo, he married Nancy Alice Waggaman, who survives.
Stephen was a 1964 graduate of Tipton High School, where he played on the football, basketball and track teams. He attended Ball State University and received his bachelor’s degree from Butler University in 1968. He played football at Butler and coached the freshman football team. Stephen was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Stephen later earned his master’s degree and his administrator’s certification from Ball State University.
Stephen retired as principal of Tipton Middle School in 2001 after 32 years of service. During his time at Tipton, he served as a teacher, coach, athletic director and principal. He attended Grace United Methodist Church. He enjoyed sports, fishing and watching his grandchildren in their athletic activities.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 44 years, Nancy Van Horn, are his sons, Michael Van Horn and wife Jennifer, Brian Van Horn and wife Jenny, all of Kokomo; five grandchildren, Katelyn, Abigail, Mitchell, Jacob and Amelia Van Horn; one brother, Jeff Van Horn, Tipton; two sisters-in-law, Dianne Waggaman, Kokomo, Joyce Specker, Indianapolis; two nephews, Kyle and Jonathan Specker, and one niece, Allison Specker.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jennifer “Sis” Van Horn.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry St., Kokomo, with Dr. Mark Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
