John C. Mills, 90, Hemet, Calif., passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. He was born June 5, 1922, in Indianapolis, to the late Willis C. and Lulu Cecile Mills. He married Frances M. Whitehead Aug. 16, 1942, and began a family of three children in Kokomo.
He served 25 years on the Kokomo Fire Department, rising to assistant chief, then later as the VA representative of Howard County. He served as the Post 6 American Legion commander, the 5th District American Legion commander, and as president of the Kokomo Dodgers in 1959.
He loved God, his family, his country and baseball. He was a man of his word, served his country and community, instilled a work ethic in his family, worked at the fair during the Depression days to earn money, and was respected and loved by his friends and his family. John and Fran moved to Hemet, Calif., in 1995.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 70 years, Frances M. Mills; daughter, Colleen Fountain and Leo Fountain; son, Tom Mills and fiancée Lisa Hyden; son-in-law, Ken Nelson; grandchildren, Kimberly Timpson, Heathyr Lawrence, Michael Conwell, Greg Conwell, Angela Lawrence and Nicole Whitehead; great-grandchildren, Michael Conwell Jr., Nick Conwell, Stephanie Cardoza, Lucky Lucero, Sharkey Reidling and Mason Hara.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Charlotte Sue Mills, and grandson, John Robert Conwell.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hemet Valley Mortuary, 402 N. San Jacinto St., Hemet, Calif. A gathering following the service will be at the home of Frances M. Mills. Internment will be at the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif.
