— Martha Ellen Barton-Russell, 100, died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, at Howard Regional Health System. She was born July 6, 1912, in Travisville, Tenn., to John Morgan Barton and Lucinda Jane Barton.
Martha graduated from high school as salutatorian from the York Agricultural Institute in 1930. She graduated from State Teachers College, Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1933. She then taught at Dry Creek and Fairview schools and was also principal at Forbus School. She moved to Muncie in 1951 and worked at JC Penney.
She married George Jerome Russell, Selma, in 1954. They had three children. She is survived by three children, Betty Joann Statom, Squim, Wash., Phillip M. Russell, Dallas, Texas, and Shirley DeHaven (partner Kim Reyburn), Russiaville; nine grandchildren, Tracy Martino, Zach Rutherford, Dee Ann Russell, Sheila Wyatt, Steve Staton, Phillip Staton, Julie Staton, Jeff Staton and Karen Staton; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Herman and Kenneth Barton; and sisters Sylvia Upchurch and Lois Neal.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Mundy Funeral Home, Jamestown, Tenn. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.
