Teresa Marie Johanning

Nov. 21, 1920 - Oct. 23, 2012

Kokomo — Teresa Marie Johanning, 91, Kokomo, died at 8:46 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012. She was born Nov. 21, 1920, to John and Augusta (Schafer) Schettler in Worthington, Minn. On April 15, 1947, she married Emil Johanning, who preceded her in death May 10, 1982.  

She graduated from Our Lady of Good Council High School and went on to graduate from Mankato State Teachers College. She taught country grade school from 1941 to 1942. In 1942, she joined the Women’s Army Air Force where she earned the European Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star. She achieved the WAAC service ribbon as well as one overseas service stripe. She attained the rank of sergeant and was a specialist in cryptography and weather forecasting for pilots.  

She went on to work for the U. S. Postal Department from 1945 to 1947. Teresa and her husband founded Fleet Supply in 1961 along with partner Les Johanning. She worked in auditing and bookkeeping for their company for over 40 years.   

She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, where she participated in the Altar Rosary Society, Our Lady Prayer Group, Ministry of Care and Church Women United. She was also a member of the American Legion, Women in Military Service, Howard County Historical Society, Elks Lodge No. 190, Indiana Sheriff’s Association and Hospital Cheer Guild.

Teresa’s family offers their sincere thanks to the staff and management of Century Villa Health Care for the loving, attentive care given to Teresa during her stay with them.

She is survived by her sons, Ken (Gladys) Johanning, Jasper, Dale (Dorothy) Johanning, Kokomo, two daughters-in-law, Julie Campbell and Robin Wall; two sisters, Honey Paulzine and MaryAnn (Babe) McCormick; 12 grandchildren, Shawn (Jennifer) Johanning, Michael (Jill) Johanning, Matthew (Nicole) Johanning, Timothy (Lisa) Johanning, Kristen (Adam) Clarke, Mark Johanning, Katie (Steve) Gray,

Andrew Johanning, Alan Johanning, Eric (Kristin) Johanning, Candace (Scott) Gilles and Brandy (Carl) Armstrong; and 15 great-grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil; sons, Wally Johanning and Wayne Johanning; one grandson, James;  brothers and sisters, Katie Sterm, Josephine Winter, Christina “Tutsie” Kobberman, August “Augie” Schettler, Ray Schettler, Lucille Winter, Ed Schettler, Augusta “Gustie” Biren, and Mildred Schettler, and Betty Rasche.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Joan of Arc Church, 3155 S. County Road 200 West, Kokomo, with the Rev. Theodore Dudzinski the celebrant. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. and friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at the church.  

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Joan of Arc Church.
