John Robert Mason

March 28, 1930 - Oct. 25, 2012

Kokomo — John Robert Mason, 82, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at the VA Hospital in Marion. He was born on March 28, 1930, in Kokomo, to Emmet R. and Donna L. (Anderson) Mason.  

After graduating from Kokomo High School, he attended Indiana University Bloomington. He married Jeri Wainwright before leaving to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War and attaining the rank of sergeant as an air traffic controller.

After returning home, he was employed by Mason Motors in downtown Kokomo. John became the new-car manager for Wiese Oldsmobile (28 years). John was also employed by Conkle Pontiac (10 years), and H.P. McGonigal (10 years). John was a great car salesman. Everyone loved him. He might have been a little rough on the outside, but was a big-hearted man and loving person within. No stranger crossed his path of life; he made friends with everyone.

He was a an excellent golfer and a member of the American Legion Post 6, as well as a member of the Kokomo Country Club for over 40 years, where he had been the club champion. John was a devoted IU basketball fan, driving many miles to games. He was also an avid Chicago Cubs and Kokomo Wildkats fan. He loved and supported all local children’s sports. His big love was golf, starting as a child at the Kokomo Country Club with his father, Emmet. He was a member of the Kokomo Wildkats golf team from 1945 to 1948. He was an excellent player for many years. John will be missed by his sons and his many friends and business colleagues. “Mason, we love you!”

Surviving are his sons, Michael Mason, Twelve Mile, John David Mason and his wife Mary, Danville, Ill., Scott R. Mason, Kokomo; granddaughter, Maggie Rose Mason, Danville, Ill., and grandson, Samson Mason, Kokomo; the mother of his children, Jeri Wainwright, Logansport; loved ones, Becky Mason and Shirley Mason, both of Kokomo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five very dear friends.  

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with military honors provided by the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted on behalf of the family to pay for funeral expenses. An account has been set up at Community First Bank of Kokomo.
