Warren E. Miller, 94, Amboy, passed away at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, 1700 E. 38th St., Marion. He was born Oct. 13, 1918, in Amboy to the late Ray and Gladys (Landrum) Miller. On Sept. 24, 1944, in Santa Fe, he married Ruth I. (Freeman); she preceded him in death on April 5, 2001.
He was a lifelong resident of Amboy. In 1941, he was drafted in the Army and served over four years in Curacao Island, where he was the head cook on the base. While on the island, Eleanor Roosevelt came to visit the troops. Knowing it was her birthday, he baked her a cake, and she later thanked him for it. Another time Mickey Rooney came to the island, and he and the troops played football with the actor. He also served 65 years in the American Legion.
After the Army, he laid brick for about 15 years and later farmed and hauled livestock for over 15 years. After retirement, they wintered in Texas for 18 years.
Surviving are his three sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven Miller and companion, Brenda Bambrough, both of Kokomo, Jack and Lois Miller, Amboy, Daniel Miller, Peru; eight grandchildren, Chris Miller, Royal Center, Scott Miller, Bunker Hill, Kurt Miller, Peru, Kelly Miller, Kokomo, Brian Miller, Westfield, Matthew Miller, Indianapolis, Emily Hileman, Indianapolis, and Joel Miller, Indianapolis; and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and a sister-in-law, Howard and Patricia Miller, Abilene, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Tim Miller; two infants; three daughters-in-law, Linda Miller, Carolyn Miller, Sara Miller; two sisters, Isabel Larrison and Louise Helm.
Graveside services for Warren will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Santa Fe Cemetery, Santa Fe, with Pastor Dwight Elliott officiating. There also will be full military rites conducted by the United States Army and the VFW immediately after his graveside services. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St.
