Carolyn Madge Freeland Young, 77, Kokomo, died at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at Century Villa Health Care in Greentown. She was born Jan. 9, 1935, to Owen H. and Jesse Josephine (Swaim) Freeland in Kokomo.
Carolyn graduated from Northwestern High School in 1953, where she served as senior class secretary. She later graduated from Indiana University Kokomo in 1974 with a teaching degree.
Carolyn married William Budd Young on Feb. 28, 1955. They were lifelong residents of Ervin Township and raised their four children on their farm in the corner of the county. He passed away on Feb. 7, 2005.
Carolyn was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She worked at Shell Oil Co. from 1953 to 1956 and was a housewife prior to graduating from IUK. She taught third grade at Flora Elementary and later Carroll Elementary from 1975 to 1991.
Carolyn was a longtime member of Judson Baptist Church, which she joined when she was 10 years old. She served as Sunday school teacher, choir member, church secretary, youth leader and was one of the first female deacons in the church. She later joined Faith Church of Christ in Burlington, where she played the organ and attended the Wednesday evening Bible study group.
She is survived by her four children, LuAnn and Steve Edwards, Milton, Fla., Larry and Teresa Young, Kokomo, Laurie and Craig Bowen, Columbia, S.C., and Leslie and Mike Eikenberry, Bringhurst; five grandchildren, Leigh F. Young, Atlanta, Ga., Reid and Camille Young, Tucson, Ariz., Jay Young, Florence, Ky., Kayla Eikenberry, Bringhurst, and Kevin Eikenberry, West Lafayette; a brother, the Rev. Kenn and Aloha Freeland, Kokomo, and Sue Freeland, Arcadia, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her brother, Richard Freeland; and her parents.
Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Judson Baptist Church, 1995 N. 750 West, Kokomo, with the Dr. Rev. Henry Hawkins and the Rev. Gary Britton officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Shirley and Stout Funeral Home and Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, and also one hour before the service Monday at the church.
