Joseph Edward “Joe” Knapp Sr., 43, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at his home. He was born Oct. 13, 1969, in Muncie. On May 13, 2011, he married Lisa A. Appleby in Albany, Ky., and she survives him.
Joe was a graduate of Kokomo High School and attended Indiana University in Bloomington for a period of time. He worked for 20 years at Chrysler, first as a janitor and later as a production operator at the casting plant. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve, and later in the U.S. Marine Corps during Operation Desert Storm.
His life was influenced by living in Greece as a child, and he loved Greek food. He treasured the years he spent on the Ball State University campus as a young teen. He was nationally known for his martial arts skills, attaining the level of 4th Dan, and achieving two national titles. Joe owned his own martial arts school in Wabash, Modus Veritas — Method of Truth. He fought in mixed martial arts events and enjoyed playing online video games.
He is survived by his mother, Linda J. Knapp; father, Jay J. Wiseman; wife, Lisa A. Knapp; son, Joseph Knapp Jr.; daughters, Clea Knapp, Ashley Knapp (Juan Mayol) and Sydney Wolfe; brothers, Jonathon Knapp (Jodi) and Jonathan Wiseman; sister, Wendy Wiseman Fisher; father-in-law, Benny Beekman; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and stepchildren; and two best friends, Brian Nation and Aaron Kane.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and a niece, Jonna.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
