Benjamin F. Hamke

Oct. 7, 1922 - Jan. 25, 2013

Benjamin F. Hamke, 90, left this world for a better place on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. The youngest son of Fred and Lydia Hamke, he was born on Oct. 7, 1922, in Freelandville.

He was a 1941 graduate of Freelandville High School. Beginning in 1941, he attended Indiana Central College of Indianapolis until being drafted into the Army for World War II and was sent to Okinawa. At cessation of World War II, he continued his education at Marion College, Marion, where he graduated in 1948 and again in 1952, achieving a bachelor of science and engineering degree.

Benjamin worked for General Tire and Rubber Co. in Marion for two years, then began his 32 years as an engineer at Delco Electronics in Kokomo.

He was a very active member of Brookside Free Methodist Church in Kokomo and enjoyed participating in activities of the Gideons International Kokomo camp and Muncie camp. He was always considered a people person. After he retired, Benjamin took up painting, and enjoyed painting landscape scenes.

Benjamin is survived by his wife; daughter, Deborah (Wick) Williams, Canon, Ga.; three grandsons, Shane (Tara) Williams, Nathan (Christie) Williams and Jason Williams, all of Georgia; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Benjamin was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lula Blaydes Hamke; sisters, Lillian Peavey and Ester McCormick; and a brother, Joseph Hamke.

There will be a funeral service for Benjamin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brookside Free Methodist Church, 400 S. 190 East, with Pastor Doug Benham officiating. Following the funeral service, we will be taking Benjamin to Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery where he will be laid to rest with military honors provided by the Kokomo VFW and United States Army military rites teams.
