Berneice Ruth Horoho

Aug. 15, 1936 - Jan. 27, 2013

Berneice Ruth Horoho, 76, Kokomo, passed away at 10:32 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, in her home after a prolonged illness. She was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Kokomo, to the late William Flynn and surviving Edna (Faulkner) Welcher.

Berneice attended Kokomo High School and graduated in 1954 before continuing her education at Indiana University at Kokomo. On Dec. 25, 1958, Berneice married Douglas C. Horoho, who survives, in the very house in Kokomo where Berneice was born.

Berneice worked as a dance instructor with Betty Hayes, then later in the accounting department at Haynes International from which she retired. Since the 1970s, she had served as a stage manager, technical director, props technician and in set construction in numerous Kokomo Civic Theatre shows such as “The Sound of Music,” “My Fair Lady,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “West Side Story.” Berneice served on the Kokomo Civic Theatre board of directors from 2003 to 2012, when she was appointed board member emeritus. In 2008, Berneice received the Kokomo Civic Theatre Lifetime Achievement Award. To honor Berneice, in 2012 KCT established the Berneice Horoho Technical Achievement Award to be given out each year to deserving honorees at their annual banquet. In addition to her successes with KCT, Berneice enjoyed extensive travels with her husband, Doug, throughout the American South and Europe, especially England.

Berneice is survived by her husband, Douglas C. Horoho; her son, Neil Horoho; her daughter, Julie (John) Pepper; two sisters, Amanda Welcher and Stephanie Xander; and several close family pets, including her French bulldogs, Lucy and Puppy, which comforted her greatly during her illness.

Berneice was preceded in death by her father, William Flynn; her son, Matthew Horoho in 2009; and brother, William Flynn Jr.

There will be a private memorial service for Berneice at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Kokomo, 800 S. Market St., with the Rev. Beverly Seese officiating. Berneice’s friends and family are welcome to join for a time of visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that same day, also at the church.
