Fred L. Wells

April 9, 1917 - July 13, 2008

Fred L. Wells, 91, Marion, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion. He was born April 9, 1917, in Marion, to Ernest and Jennie (Gerber) Wells. Fred married Jeanette L. Stetzel on Sept. 22, 1940, in Huntington. They spent 61 happy years together.

Fred was a member of the Senior Citizens, where he played euchre three times a week with his friends. He was an avid mall and river walker with many of his friends. He walked an average of 10 miles a day.

Fred was a devoted Cubs and Pacers fan. He loved fishing and playing horseshoes. In his early day, he was a Golden Glove boxer and played baseball for Fox Deluxe Brewery. He also loved spending time camping with his kids and grandkids.

Fred worked at Crosley’s Truck Plant, Brooks Construction Co. and Fox Deluxe Brewery. He retired in 1987, after 37 years of service from Bell Fiber.

Fred lived in his birthplace for 89 years of his life and the past two years with his son, Fred, and daughter-in-law Polly who cared for him.

He is survived by a daughter Doris and Tom Hall, Camp Verde, Ariz.; two sons, Fred A. and Polly Wells, and Richard A. and Mary Wells, Marion; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Fred had a total of 13 brothers and sisters, and three survive, Kenneth and Mercedes Wells, Kokomo, Joann Nash, Marion, and Harvey Wells Connerville. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Jennie Wells; his wife, Jeanette Wells; and two brothers and seven sisters.

Funeral services are 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Adam Mueller officiating at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Services, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion. Burial will be in Garden of Memory Cemetery, Huntington County, Marion. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before the service at the funeral home. Online condolences can be made at
