Richard Lowell Short

Mr. Richard Lowell Short, 81, Ozark, Ala., died Friday morning, Dec. 11, 2009, at his home. Short was born April 27, 1928, in Gary, to the late Dora Mae Sarnes Short and Richard Marion Short.

He owned and operated American Heritage Inn and the International Smorgasbord in Kokomo. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed a fishing trip twice each year to Canada and often at Lake Eufaula. He also enjoyed playing golf and cooking. Mr. Short was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, where he was a substitute Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Patricia Ann Bixler Short, Ozark; one daughter and son-in-law, Toni Sue and James R. Myer, Kalamazoo, Mich.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lowell and Rebecca Jo Short, Kokomo; five grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 16 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Ann Brown, and one brother, James Henry Short.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Miss Shirley Chancey, 4399 E. Andrews Ave., Ozark, AL 36360.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Robinson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends in the church from 12:30 p.m. Monday until service time.
