David Wilson Nettles, 68, Kokomo died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, Fla., while on vacation with his wife. David was born Jan. 18, 1945, to the late Woodrow W. And Bettye Rose (Mangold) Nettles in Evansville. He graduated from Bosse High School in the class of 1963. On Nov. 30, 1968, he married Mary Ruth Shaw at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Evansville and moved to Kokomo in 1970.
He turned his love of cars into a career, working as a technician and service manager at several Chrysler dealerships in the area. In 1995, he started working at AutoZone until a recent illness.
He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. He gave back to his community by serving on the Indian Heights Volunteer Fire Department for almost 20 years as a firefighter and EMT. He coached his sons, along with their friends, at Taylor South East Little League on the Roto-Rooter Team and was very involved in the building the Little League diamonds at Taylor High School. Later he coached his daughters in the TYO Girls Softball League at Oakford, his sons’ TYO Flag Football and Taylor PAL League. He learned to respect the high school band members while serving in the Taylor Band Boosters. He also served as president of the Taylor Wrestling booster club. He loved teaching youth how to play sports with a passion for fair play. His motto was: “If you lost a game and tried your best, the game just ended too soon.” He was an avid Indianapolis Colts and IU Hoosier basketball fan. He loved to watch anything that involved wheels going round, and balls being bounced, passed or batted. And the Cubs were always going to win “next year.”
David is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary; four children, Mark (Jennifer) Nettles, Paducah, Ky., Scott (Lori) Nettles, Kokomo, Cindi (Don) Schmitt, Fort Wayne, and Jennifer (Ryan) Carmichael, Wabash; 10 grandchildren, Aubree Nettles, Paducah, Ky., Adam Nettles, Paducah, Ky., Alyssa Nettles, Paducah, Ky., Kylie Carmichael, Wabash, Cash Carmichael, Wabash, Kiara Carmichael, Wabash, Caden Carmichael, Wabash, Kolton Mickle Davis, Kokomo, Drew Davis, Kokomo, and Kyra Davis, Kokomo; brother, Dennis L.
