Louie P. Schmidt

Sept. 10, 1928 - Feb. 28, 2013

— Louie P. Schmidt, 84, Kokomo, passed away at 2:45 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kokomo.

Born Sept. 10, 1928, in Logansport, he was the son of the late Louis V. and Mary (Proctor) Schmidt. On Aug. 14, 1949, he married Anita M. Austin, who survives.

He was 1946 Logansport High School graduate.

Louis was earlier employed by Pennsylvania Railroad and also had his own heating and plumbing business in Logansport. He later took up tool design as a profession and became employed by Logansport Machine. As they moved to Kokomo in 1960, he became employed by Haynes International and Hoosier Broach, both of Kokomo.

He was a member of the Kokomo Elks #190, where he devoted much of his time as trustee, tyler and volunteer of many projects including the annual Elks picnic. He also later became a member of the Kokomo Eagles.

There wasn’t anything Louie couldn’t do, from small home repair to building his own garage at one time. He was adept at anything mechanical, including automotive pursuits. This included several father and son car projects.

After his retirement, he took on a restoration project of an Austin Healey. He enjoyed many drives to the country with it and which led him to become a member of the Austin Healey Club of America. Louie was an avid I.U. basketball and Colts fan and he also enjoyed golfing, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was a very giving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Anita M. Schmidt, Kokomo; and son, Michael Schmidt (Carolyn), Kokomo; and their children, Scott Schmidt (Robyn) and their family, Gavin and Chloe, all of Kokomo, and Sean Schmidt (Renee) and their family, Cody and Tanner, all of Walton, Susan Cunningham (Chad) and their daughter, Cassidy, all of Birmingham, Mich., and Tim Fenimore (Jennifer) and their family, Hannah and Zach, all of Bradenton, Fla.; and daughter, Deborah Patchett and her children, Kimberlee Patchett, Scott Patchett and his son, Christopher and Blair Patchett, all of California; special nephew, David Patty (Kathy), Logansport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by sisters, Shirley Detrick and Sandra Miller; and sister-in-law, Duanna Patty, and her husband, Burdette.

His wishes were to be cremated with no visitation or services.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America Inc., 158 West 29th St. 7th Floor, New York, N.Y., 10001-5300.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Marocco-Rans Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services, 119 E. Market St., Logansport. Please sign the online guest book and condolences to the Schmidt Family at ransfuneralhomes.com.
