Cmdr. James F. Moore

July 9, 1918 - March 18, 2013

Cmdr. James F. Moore, 94, U.S. Naval Reserve retired, died Monday, March 18, 2013. He was born July 9, 1918 at home near Bunker Hill, to Edgar Valentine and Grace Tillett Moore. In 1958, he married Charlene Weimer McCormick and had a wonderful marriage of 46 years until Charlene’s death in 2004.

He was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School and graduated from Purdue University in 1940 with a bachelor of science degree. While attending Purdue, he was a member of the Purdue Glee Club for three years.

Moore retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1958, having served since 1940. In 1940, he served on the battleship USS Arkansas. In 1941, he was assigned to the USS Antares as a senior officer. This ship was at the mouth of Pearl Harbor during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack. Later he was the executive officer of the USS Antares. During his naval career, he was commanding officer of the USS Pembina during World War II and the commanding officer of the USS Burlington during the Korean War.

From 1948 to 1949, he was an administration officer at the Severn River Naval Command at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.  While stationed at Annapolis, he served on the General Court-Martial Board and was third in line to assume command of the academy.

Moore received various medals and ribbons, including the Combat Ribbon with Five Battle Stars and a medal and ribbon from Kim Dae-Jung, the president of the Republic of Korea.  

Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he joined the firm of United States Fidelity and Guarantee — Foster and Messick Division in Indianapolis. He worked there for 24 years in the engineering department.

Moore was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, an avid photographer, loved flying, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the American Theater Wing in New York. He was very active in the Ole Olsen Theater, where he acted in many plays and served as president of the organization.

Moore is survived by his stepchildren, Anne McCormick Duvall (Michael), Murfreesboro, Tenn., William Charles McCormick, Indianapolis, and Joseph Weimer McCormick (Patricia), Peru; grandchildren, Michael Ford Duvall II, Murfreesboro, Tenn., Jenifer McCormick Ricketts (Hank), Fishers, Justin McCormick (Tricia), Fishers, and Marisa Stewart, Elkhart; nephew, Gregory Moore Ogle (Carole), Bunker Hill; niece, Sally Moore Hemdal (John), Dundee, Mich.; cousin, Bill Tillett, Indianapolis; and several grandnieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene; his parents; brother, Capt. Paul Edgar Moore, who was a POW of the Japanese during World War II; and his sister, Mildred Moore Ogle.

A service celebrating the life of James F. Moore will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, with the Rev. Joel Flowers officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit and U.S. Navy. Family and friends will gather at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.  

Memorial donations may be made through the funeral home to the Miami County Salvation Army or Miami County Helping Hands.
