Charles W. Byers, 81, Kokomo, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013. He was born June 3, 1931, in Kokomo, to Myerl and Myrtle (James) Byers. He married his wife of 64 years, Martene Porter, Jan. 21, 1949, who survives.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1947 to 1949. He worked at Cuneo Press in Kokomo from 1949 to 1978, then worked for Doug Davies Auctions from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. He was a member of the Courtland Avenue Church of Christ in Kokomo. Charles enjoyed IU basketball and NASCAR.
In addition to his wife, Martene Byers, he is survived by sons, Charles “Chip” Byers Jr. (Anabelle), El Paso, Texas, and Bryan Byers (Dawn), Kokomo; daughter, Betsy Jansma (Mark), Monon; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donnie Byers, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by two children, Kevin and Teresa Byers; three brothers; and three sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
