Kokomo —
George Albert Lewis, 88, Kokomo, passed away at 9:08 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at Community Howard Regional Health System. He was born to Vernon and Edna Lewis July 19, 1924, in Hall. He married Elizabeth (Gibbs) Lewis June 29, 1962, and she passed away Feb. 7, 1993. He then married Stella Lewis, who also preceded him in death.
George was a World War II veteran who served overseas for Gen. George Patton, and dearly loved his country, country music and IU basketball. However, his favorite sport was baseball and he was a long-suffering Chicago Cubs fan. He was sought out while a teenager to play baseball with the Indianapolis Indians, but he thought truck driving seemed like a lot of fun because his big brother, Rilus, was a truck driver. Later in life, he always regretted not taking advantage of the opportunity to play baseball. He drove a truck many years, owned a couple of restaurants, was the supervisor of a gas station and painted houses. He taught all of his children, and many of his grandchildren to paint.
He lived in Indiana, Arizona and Florida through most of his life, and at the Jefferson Manor in Kokomo for the last five years. He had very good friends there and everywhere he went. He loved to joke, laugh and be where the music was playing. He loved all his family, but was heard saying not long before he passed that he was waiting to go home to be with “his girl,” and everyone knew that was Liz. He knew Jesus as his savior, as did she, so we know they are dancing with the Lord now. Good bye Dad, until we meet again!
George is survived by a son, Robert W. (Sharon) Lewis, Logansport; three daughters, Patty (Marshall) Lambert, Kokomo, Nancy Jones, Kokomo, and Rebecca (Carl) Bergstrom, Kokomo; and a stepson, Delbert Parham, Kokomo; grandchildren, Joseph (Lori) Meade, Kokomo, Julie Comp, Kokomo, Mike Bergstrom, Kokomo, Dan (Missy) Gibbs, Kokomo, Joshua (Misty) Jones, Kokomo, Allen Lewis, Kokomo, and Robert W. Lewis, Kokomo, Martin T. (Satomi) Jones of Yokosuka, Japan, and Marla Sample of Elk Grove, Calif.; his great-grandchildren, Courtnie Gibbs, Mitchel Hendrix, Sylvia and Audrey Meade, Sydney H. and Chelsea K. Jones, Heidi Elizabeth Jones, Amber Scott and Madison Martinez, and Cameron and Cadense Bergstrom; one great-great grandson, Landen Gibbs; and many very special brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his beloved siblings, Rilus Lewis, Leota Juleman and Mary Bishop, his precious daughter, Kathy Hilton, and his loving wives that will be meeting him in heaven.
A funeral service for George will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St., Kokomo, with Leon Clark officiating. All of George’s friends and family are welcome to join together for a time of visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, also at the mortuary.
