Alfred Stephen ‘Steve’ Wootton

Kokomo — Alfred Stephen “Steve” Wootton passed away at The Heart Center of Indiana in Indianapolis on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012. Steve was born in Evansville to Alfred Theodore Wootton and Evelyn Rebecca (Gross) Wootton. He married the love of his life, Karen Kay Newcomer, on June 11, 1966.

Stephen was preceded in death by his mother and his father.

He is survived by his wife, Karen “Katie” Wootton, Kokomo; daughter, Jana Gail (Monte) Babb, Kokomo; son, Jeffery Stephen Wootton, Kokomo; brother, David (Jeanette) Wootton, Colorado; sister, Rebecca (Jay) Sollars, Marion; stepmother, June Wootton, Missouri; stepsister, Rhea (John) Whitton, Missouri; grandchildren, Jacob Wootton, Liam Page, Sophie Page and Monte Vincent Babb. He also leaves behind a legion of nieces, nephews and dear friends. He will be greatly missed by his beloved “man’s best friend,” Morgan.

Steve graduated from Marion High School in 1958, continuing his education at Indiana University and Indiana Wesleyan University. He served in the National Guard for six years with an honorable discharge in 1968, and a career with Chrysler beginning in 1965, with retirement in November 2001.

Stephen was a true soldier of God and served his Lord and community in both Marion and Kokomo as a member of the Wesleyan Church.

During his childhood, he enjoyed drawing on scraps of paper, but did not consider it a priority. His uncle, Jim Gross, and cousin, Sonny Gross, were very active in the art community, and these two men grew his appreciation of art. His dedication to his children, his job, school and church involvement left little time for artistic expression. After retirement, he found time to take art seriously. His greatest joy was painting, and he only hoped the Lord would grant him years to learn and grow as an artist.

Through his many art memberships and affiliations, Steve was richly recognized and awarded for his mastery. He was noted for his pastels, of which he was self-taught in later life. Most notably, he received a first-place award for a pastel in the Hoosier Salon annual exhibition in 2010.

As a voice of God’s love, Steve’s gentle words and caring soul will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., with his brother-in-law, Jay Sollars, officiating. Burial will follow at Albright Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association, with envelopes provided at the mortuary. You are invited to read Steve’s obituary at www.ellersmortuary.com, where you may sign the guest book, share a personal message or order flowers for the family. Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
