— E. Jane Smith, 86, Kokomo, passed away peacefully at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Century Villa Nursing Home, Greentown, after a long illness. She was born to George and Meda (Walker) Gibbs on Nov. 24, 1923, in Kokomo. She was married to Paul J. Smith, who passed away Dec. 9, 1988.
Jane attended Kokomo High School. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was an avid reader.
Jane is survived by her two children, Linda C. (John) Mitchell, Santa Clara, Calif., and William H. (Nancy) Smith, Lafayette; four grandchildren, Diana Ford, Michele (Marty) Bowlin, Jason (Amber) Mitchell and Christopher (Carrie) Mitchell; and great-grandchildren Emily and Evan Ford, Hannah, Allison and Spencer Bowlin, and Clea Mitchell with a baby brother to be born this week. Other survivors include some special nieces and nephews, along with a dedicated friend, Marti Brittain, and a number of other close friends.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Hazel “Dude” Tull, Mary Draper, Betty Stocker, brothers, John Gibbs, George “Buzz” Gibbs, and some nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are noon Thursday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., with Pastor David Leeder officiating. All of Jane’s friends are welcome to join her family at the mortuary for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Contributions can be made in Jane’s memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
