Richard Joseph ‘Dick’ Christie

Dec. 21, 1946 - Nov. 6, 2012

Kokomo — Richard Joseph “Dick” Christie, 65, Kokomo, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at his residence. He was born Dec. 21, 1946, in Kokomo, to Myron D. and Mary Helen (Fleming) Christie.    

Dick graduated from Kokomo High School in 1965 and was on the mythical state football championship team of 1964.

Dick attended Butler University on a football scholarship from 1965 to 1968. He played ball for Tony Hinkle. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He left Butler in 1968 and served in the United States Army as a military policeman at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, N.M., where he was awarded “Soldier of the Quarter” while serving. He was discharged from the Army in 1970.

Dick returned to Butler University in 1970 and graduated in 1972. He was employed at Western Southern Insurance Company from 1972 to 1974.  

In the fall of 1974, Dick began teaching and coaching at Tipton High School. He was an assistant football coach and head wrestling and track coach.

In 1990, Dick was named assistant athletic director at Kokomo High School. He was thrilled to return to his alma mater. He also served as assistant football coach at Kokomo High School.  

Dick retired in June 2012 but recently returned to working a few hours a week in the athletic department at K.H.S.

Dick was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Indiana State Wrestling Association and the Kokomo High School Alumni Association.

On March 15, 1969, Dick married Marianne (Gentry) who survives. Also surviving are his children, Andrew (Ginger) Christie, Evansville, Ryan (Robin) Christie, Noblesville, and Lauren Christie, Augusta, Ga., grandchildren, Taylor and Braedon Christie, Evansville, and Grant, Madelyn, and Sophia Christie, Noblesville; brother; Jerry (Wanda) Christie, Kokomo; brothers-in-law; Dave (Becky) Gentry, McCordsville, Tim (Beth) Gentry, Kokomo, Dennis (Laurie) Gentry, Angola. Also surviving is his mother-in-law; Betty Gentry, Kokomo, as well as his nephews, Jay, Kagan and Kameron Gentry.         

Funeral services for Dick will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kokomo Memorial Gym, 200 Apperson Way N., with Pastor Mark Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the United States Army and the Kokomo military rites team.  Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kokomo Memorial Gym.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Kokomo High School Athletic Department.
