Ned R. Johnson, 88, Galveston, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born Nov. 29, 1924, the son of Frank and Florence (Downhour) Johnson. His mother died in 1926 and he was raised by his foster parents, Sam and Marie (Johnson) Sprinkle.
He was married May 22, 1945 to Betty (Foy) Johnson in Columbia City and she survives. He owned and operated Johnson’s Service Station in Galveston for 40 years, retiring Dec. 16, 1989. He graduated from Galveston High School in 1942 and attended Purdue University following World War II.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 serving on the U.S.S. Rock in the submarine service in the South Pacific theater.
He was a member of the Galveston United Methodist Church, Walton American Legion Post 418, a submarine veteran of World War II and was a former member of the Galveston Lions Club, and served on the Galveston Fire Department. He was a member of the Galveston Masonic Lodge #244 F. & A.M. He enjoyed bowling and golf.
In 1946 Ned and Betty moved to Galveston and lived in the same house they currently live in. He was an excellent mechanic and was a well-respected businessman in the community for 40 years. He was a mentor to the young men whom he employed and taught the trade to his son Kent, who worked along side him for many years. The last 15 years, Ned and Betty wintered in Sebring, Fla. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; daughters, Carole L. (John) Hardy, Walton, and Connie L. (Larry) Crabtree, Muncie; son, Kent R. (Suzi) Johnson, Galveston; grandchildren, Lisa (Lance) Brand, Muncie, Ryan (Amber) Crabtree, Hartford City, Susan (Rob) Mohrland, Riverview, FL., Scott Hardy, Walton, Angie Padilla and companion, Brent Hensley, Walton, Jill Johnson, Galveston, Melanie (Brandon) Kelly, Walton, Ryan Downhour, Brandon Downhour, Scott Downhour, Lance Downhour, Rob Downhour and Butch Downhour; great-grandchildren, Tyler Brand, Katherine Brand, Riley Brand, Charlie Crabtree, Caden Mohrland, Caris Mohrland, Cameron Mohrland, Tristen Padilla and McKenzie Kelly; brother, Fred Johnson, Sheffield, Ala.; and sister-in-law, Irma Wilson, Peoria, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Delbert Johnson; and granddaughter, Sara Johnson.
Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Galveston United Methodist Church, 515 S. Maple St., Galveston, and one hour prior to the services.
Funeral service is at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Galveston United Methodist Church with Rev. Roy E. Ice, officiating. Burial will be in the Galveston Cemetery.
