Rita M. Hopkins, 74, Kokomo, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Fairmont Rehabilitation Center, Kokomo. She was born June 11, 1938 in Tipton County, to Jesse and Mary (Kelley) Brockett. On Feb. 14, 1964, Rita married Smith B. “Smitty” Hopkins, and he preceded her in death Nov. 2, 2011.
Rita was a 1956 graduate of Tipton High School and a member of Macedonia Christian Church in Kokomo, where she was active with Macedonia Ladies Fellowship.
She was an avid “crafter,” enjoying embroidery and floral displaying, as well as keeping very busy with her grandchildren’s activities. Her past activities include volunteering with the Boy and Girl Scouts, bowling on various leagues in Tipton and Howard Counties, walking each year in the Relay for Life, and over the years she had worked as a bookkeeper.
Rita’s survivors include her daughter, Cindy and husband Fred Pitts, Kokomo; grandchildren, Grant, Fred, Katyie and Quinton Pitts; two brothers, Ron Brockett, Cicero, and Larry Brockett, Kokomo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a son, Audie Hopkins.
Calling will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Christian Church, located on Ind. 19 North in Howard County. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Interment will take place following services in Tipton’s Fairview Cemetery. Pastors Mike Greenwood, John Piotrowicz and Steve Brown will be officiating.
