Denzil Abney Sr.

April 20, 1941 - Jan. 18, 2013

Denzil Abney Sr., 71, Kokomo, died Friday Jan. 18, 2013. He was born April 20, 1941, in Mt. Vernon, Ky., the son of Marion and Sally (Channey) Abney Sr. On Aug. 14, 1960, in Sneedsville, Tenn., he married Opal Faye Abney, and she survives.

Denzil was a 1961 graduate of Berea Foundation, Berea, Ky. He was employed by Chrysler Corporation for 30 years serving as a union steward. He also owned and operated Abney’s Masonry for 50 years before retiring. He enjoyed construction, motorcycling and playing cards.

In addition to his wife, Denzil is survived by brothers, Preston Dolie Abney, Kokomo, Keytron Abney, Terry Abney, and John Gerald Abney, all of Montpelier; sisters, Zella Miller, Mt. Vernon, Ky., Faye Holbrook, Mt. Vernon, Ky., Barbara Johnson, Mt. Vernon, Ky., Kathy Utterback, Lexington, Ky., Ruby Stone, Lexington, Ky., and Ruth Nestleroad, Montpelier; sons, Denzil Abney Jr., Holland, Mich., and Jeffrey Scott Abney, Kokomo; one daughter, Teresa Faye Smith, Miami, Ind.; grandchildren, Denzil Jacob Abney, Holland, Mich., Andrew Douglas Rigsby, Holland, Mich., Benny Hillis, Russiaville, and Joesphy Scott Rigsby, Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Kayla Hensley, Kokomo, Quiency Hensley, Kokomo, Bailey Hensley, Kokomo, Aubree Hillis, Russiaville, and Jalen Hillis, Russiaville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marion Abney Jr., Keith Ray Abney and Tenon Abney; and one grandchild, Nicole Faye Regan.

Funeral services will begin at noon Tuesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Gary Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Friends may call on the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
