Alberta J. Morris

Alberta J. Morris, 83, Ridgefield, Conn., wife of John W. Morris, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Morris was born in Kokomo Dec. 1, 1929, the daughter of the late Virgil and Mary Jane (Smith) Languell. 

She attended Kokomo schools and received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics. She received her master’s degree in education from Fairfield University.

An educator, Mrs. Morris taught at Stamford High School from 1967 to 1974. She then taught as a substitute teacher in Toronto. In 1977, Mr. & Mrs. Morris and family relocated to Ridgefield, where she was an educator with the Ridgefield Public School system from 1977 to 1993. She then became a private tutor.

She enjoyed sewing, music, gardening, reading and travel and sports. She was passionate about Indiana University basketball and enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially her favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. Most of all, she enjoyed time with her family.

A resident of Ridgefield for the past 35 years, Mrs. Morris was a member of the Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut and Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church of Ridgefield and a member of its Deborah Circle.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, Mrs. Morris is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” Hedlund, Eva Hagon and Mary “Nellie” Schivera; three sons, Gilbert Morris, Thomas Morris and Wade Morris; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, Ridgefield. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church. Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield, Conn., is in charge of arrangements.
