Don’t believe the lies they tell

A nation can survive its fools and even the ambitious, but it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gate is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banners openly against the city, but a traitor moves among those within the gates freely. His sly whispers rustling through all alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears no traitor. He appeals to the baseness of lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the sole of a nation; he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city, or a nation; he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.

A nation, our nation, will be taken down by our own government by the traitors within.

We the people stand up for nothing. We believe the lies and we don’t stand up for the truth.

When it comes time to vote or anything else in life, stand up for the truth that is there, search for it, live your life with what is the truth. Don’t live the lies that live within us daily.

The downfall of early voting

Several years ago, a new election wrinkle reared its head, and for many, it was a good thing. But wait, it’s time to take a second look.

This “wrinkle” I write of? I refer to “early voting.” Early voting sounds good, at first blush, however those who vote early, who vote before the official Nov. 6 Election Day, must deal with voting only partially informed.

I intend to vote, on Nov. 6, after all pertinent information has been heard. Not sooner when much, including the debates, has yet to be heard and said.

I urge all who are legally qualified to vote, but to vote informed.

Rights don’t depend on numbers

Some believe that since gays are a small minority, it does not matter if they have the right to marry the person that they love. Less than 2 percent of Americans are Jewish. Would they deny Jews a right to marry because they are such a small group?

Civil rights and liberty don’t go into effect, only when there is a minimum number of people like you being discriminated against. The fact is that the vast majority of supporters of gay rights and marriage equality are not gay themselves. They are the parents, friends, co-workers, pastors, brothers, sisters and cousins of gay men and women.

Or people who just believe in equality and justice for all. Yes, the majority of states have banned gays from marrying, but 40 states in their history have had bans on interracial couples from marrying.

Now, people commonly defend their anti-marriage equality position on religious grounds, but so did those who argued for bans on interracial marriages. Fortunately though, churches came to realize that interracial couples were not a threat, as they are coming to realize also now with marriage equality. Last year, polls showed for the first time that the majority of Americans supported marriage equality. Maine, Maryland and Washington will approve it this November and Minnesota will defeat an anti-gay marriage amendment at the same time. It’s our turn to do what is right and ensure that all Hoosiers have the right to marry the person that they have loved, sometimes for decades.
