Day at the fair a success

Jill Snyder and staff at Mental Health Association send this Cheer to those who helped with the Social Club Day at the fair:

“A big thank you to the Greentown Lions Club for sponsoring our annual Mental Health’s Social Club Day at the fair. Approximately 160 consumers enjoyed lunch and rides on a very sunny and hot day.

“We are also grateful to Jay Freeman and his crew of cooks and helpers, including the Howard County 4-H Fair Queen and her court. What a great group of young ladies.

“A big help were our volunteers (26), which were Center Road Church of Christ Youth Service group directed by Rusty Maynard, MHA’s staff and regular volunteers.

“We appreciate you and so does our clients.”

A customer for life

Beth Wilson, of Kokomo, sends this Cheer to Printcraft Press Inc.:

“In today’s economy we are always looking for the ‘best deal,’ but sometimes when we find the ‘best deal’ we may lose quality and/or service. Well, that is not the case in Kokomo when you need something printed.

“Printcraft Press Inc., located at the corner of Union and Vaile, is a one-stop shop for all your printing needs. Their quality and service is like no other, and, they have the best pricing. I have used them for several years now on both a professional and personal level for business cards to banners to balloons.

“It is a family-owned business and it is refreshing to see that they have survived with all of the economic ups and downs. They recently printed several different items for our church and the quality was awesome. After obtaining three different quotes, Printcraft Press still had the best pricing and they will work you on design and offer suggestions that you might not think of.

“Thank you to Dave and Kevin for awesome customer service, quality products, timely delivery, and great pricing. I will continue to use them and refer new business their way. I hope they are in Kokomo for years to come.”

Thanks for a beautiful downtown

F.C. Tucker/Tomlinson Inc. sends this Cheer to downtown work:

“We would like to thank all of the people who are responsible for the beautification of the downtown area. What a joy to bring new people moving to the Kokomo area to our lovely downtown area. The flowers, the bumpouts, new paving on the streets ... all of the improvements are wonderful and we want you to know how very much we appreciate all the hard work.

“The city looks great!”

Youth league thankful

The Galveston Youth League sends this Cheer to the Henry family:

“The Galveston Youth League would like to formally thank Brian and Lynn Henry and their family. We appreciate the many hours that you have volunteered to the organization and the children of the sport.

“We can truly say that our children and our park would not be the same without your passionate service over the past years. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Thanks for the fireworks show

Jay Freeman and the Greentown Lions Club sends this Cheer to supporters:

“A big thank you goes out to the following merchants and individuals for the support they gave us for the fireworks display on July Fourth in Greentown: town of Greentown, Greentown Lions Club, Howard Regional Health System, Shrock’s Dri Gas, Lin and Jane Ortman, Harvey Construction, First Farmers Bank and Trust, R G Enterprise, E-On Wind Energy, On Site Services, American Legion Post 317, Lowell E. Symons American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of American Legion Post 317, Hasler-Stout Funeral Home, Brad Howell Ford, Greentown Equipment, Greentown Mini Storage, Norris Insurance, Beck Seed, Mike Imbler, Sharon’s Beauty Salon, All in Good Taste Catering, Panda Van, Century Villa, Howard County Horse and Pony Club, and Greentown Antique Mall.”

Dad’s legacy lives on

Amanda Thompson Kinney of Sharpsville sends this Cheer to those who helped with ride:

“I would like to thank everyone involved in the Matt Thompson Memorial Ride that was held on July 11. I realize in these tough economic times that everyone has tightened their belts.

“However, our community had proved once again how generous they truly are. I can’t thank enough the businesses and citizens that made monetary donations and supplied great door prizes.

“The generosity of Thom Shuck opening this home and organizing another great ride can never be repaid. The hospitality of the businesses where the stops were held was amazing also. I can’t begin to name all the people who gave up their Sunday to help us. I just hope they know how much we appreciate them and how much they mean to us.

“It’s encouraging to know the legacy of my dad lives on, and I take comfort that he’s protecting us still. Thanks again.”

The song “Sixteen Tons” recalls a long ago time of absolute control over coal miners by mine owners.

Miners were not paid in cash but in non-transferable scripts/vouchers. The miners could never save anything and actually ended up owing the mine owners for the privilege of working in the mines.
