— Kokomo loves its canines

Gail Beaton, a Dog Daze volunteer, sends two Cheers:

“A huge thank you to John Martino, superintendent of the Kokomo Parks and Recreation Department, to the board of the Parks Department and their staff for ‘Pooches in the Pool.’ It was an intriguing concept, well-planned and well-organized on site.

“The dogs (and the pet parents) had a ball – even the ones that decided swimming wasn’t their thing had fun running and playing with other dogs. Everyone exiting the experience had a sense of laughter, were sharing funny stories and expressing what a fun experience it was for both dogs and humans!

“Praise to the staff for their care and consideration in seeing that the entrance was secure, and that the event ran smoothly. This was just one more positive event that makes Kokomo such a great place to live!

“Also, the Dog Daze volunteers of Kokomo cheer Carla and her K-Lynn K-9 Academy. At our recent fundraiser, the owner of K-Lynn surprised and thrilled our volunteer group with the offer of her agility training equipment.

“This was one of the goals of our fundraising efforts, so to receive all of the items at one time was terrific! Not only did she give us all this great equipment, she arranged transport for all of the 15-plus pieces.

“It is not our intent, at this time, to establish an agility training course within the Kokomo dog parks, but to use the equipment for the dogs to get a greater level of exercise and provide training pieces that pet parents and dogs can use together.

“Some of the pieces are already placed in both Mohr and Mehling dog parks – and other pieces are in storage so that we can change items around throughout the year.

“Thank you, K-Lynn K-9 Academy!”

Your kindness was appreciated

The family of Dan Haworth sends this Cheer:

“We would like to thank all family members and friends for their sympathy and kindness during our time of sorrow.

“We would like especially to thank the members of the Kokomo Common Council for being pallbearers, and the Rozzi family for opening their facility to hold the family dinner after the funeral. Also, thank you to Pastor Greg Reed for his services.

“The support that we received helped us get through a difficult time in our life.”

Princesses show their power

Brianne Boruff of Bona Vista Programs sends this Cheer:

“The Bona Vista Foundation would like to thank everyone for supporting the 12th annual Cinderella Ball event held Aug. 20. Fathers and daughters came and spent an evening together, while enjoying a sit-down dinner, carriage ride, ballroom dance lesson, craft activity and opportunity to interact with Cinderella and Prince Charming. The event is designed to help foster healthy family relationships between fathers and their daughters. The Cinderella Ball also offers young ladies an opportunity to make a difference in their community by bringing a donation for a local nonprofit organization. Princess Power, part of the evening events, helps instill philanthropic giving into our princesses.

“Princess Power reminds young ladies of the blessings in their lives and encourages them to share with others who may not be as fortunate. Princess Power also illustrates the spirit of working together to affect positive change in our community.

“Princesses are encouraged to bring a donation for Bona Vista Programs’ Early Childhood Services to the event. What happened when princesses shared their blessings at the Aug. 20 event? Together, the princesses donated: 5 boxes of sandwich bags, 2 sandwich containers, 6 packages of tissue wrap, 29 assorted crafts, stickers, glitter, 9 bottles of paint, modeling glue, 6 packs of Play-Doh, dress-up clothes, games, activity books, 1 jump rope, 7 sticky notes, 16 pads of notebook paper, 1 bottle of perfume, 32 Ball lids, 14 toothbrushes, 18 highlighters, 1 pack of dry erasers, 1 pack of sharpeners, 199 glue sticks, 4 pencil boxes, 18 pens, 61 erasers, 24 glue bottles, 20 calculators, 25 glitter glue sticks, 1,976 crayons, 3 pencil sharpeners, 7 scissors, 52 magic markers, 18 packs of colored pencils, 2,969 sheets of construction paper, 240 pencils, 28 watercolor paints, 20 rolls of paper towel, 7 bars of soap, 5 Clorox wipe containers, 26 boxes of Kleenex, 1 bag of napkins, 5 rolls of toilet paper, 2 dry erase boards, 1 puffy ball, 5 folders, 6 containers of sanitizer wipes. Whew! Now that’s Princess Power!

“Money raised from this event will help support programs and services to benefit pediatric programs at Bona Vista Programs.

“We would like to thank our event sponsors, because without their support, our event would not have generated over $10,000 to benefit the Bona Vista Foundation! The Bona Vista Foundation supports the mission of Bona Vista Programs by providing funding for the various programs and services we offer to

children with and without disabilities. Many, many thanks to

our Corporate Sponsor – The Bona Vista Foundation Board of Directors.

“Activity Sponsors – Community First Bank, McGonigal, Buick GMC, and Button Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, Center for Early Childhood Education, TenBrook Heating and Cooling, Hayes Advisory Group, The Wyman Group, Stout and Son Funeral Home and Fine Home Furnishings, Huston Electric and State Farm, Nick Pate.

“T-shirt Sponsors – Spray Tanning by Patty Thatcher, Bucheri, McCarty and Metz LLC, Cheer Guild Gift Shops, Brian Oaks, Attorney At Law, Pediatric Dental Specialists of IN PC, Jansens Asphalt and Tax Service, Staffing Resource, Jarrell Orthodontics, Tranquility Day Spa, American Health Network, Steven A. Hott, M.D., Dechert Law Office and Brant Parry Law Office.

“Several local businesses stepped up and donated items for our Princess goody bags. Please help us support these gracious businesses: The Box Store, Jefferson House of Flowers, Syndicate Sales, Daisy’s Sip n’ Dip, State Farm, Nick Pate, Hayes Advisory Group, Spray Tan by Patty Thatcher, Center for Early Childhood Education and Bona Vista Programs.

“Bona Vista Programs sends a huge thank you to all of the volunteers, sponsors, goody-bag donors and committee members that helped make the 12th annual Cinderella Ball a success! We would not be successful without all of the wonderful talents and abilities of everyone involved.”

The song “Sixteen Tons” recalls a long ago time of absolute control over coal miners by mine owners.

Miners were not paid in cash but in non-transferable scripts/vouchers. The miners could never save anything and actually ended up owing the mine owners for the privilege of working in the mines.
