Coaches Against Cancer raises $5,300
Mike McCroskey, girls basketball coach at Carroll High School, sends this Cheer for everyone involved in Coaches Against Cancer:
“Carroll High School, with the help of the Northwestern boys basketball program on Friday night, and the Rossville girls program on Saturday, raised in excess of $5,300 for the American Cancer Society in our Coaches Against Cancer games.
“Pledge money is still coming, so that number should go higher.
“All four teams involved had their staffs and teams decked out in pink T-shirts. The Lady Cougars wore pink uniforms for the game on Saturday. The officials on Friday night had pink whistles.
“Money was raised through T-shirt sales at the three schools involved; pledges per point scored by the Carroll teams, and for In Celebration of and In Memory of placards that were placed on the wall off the gym.
“We had an incredible effort put forth by several of the basketball parents to coordinate this heartwarming event.”
‘Don’t take one second for granted’
Norman and Colleen Blackburn of Cutler send this Cheer following their car accident:
“We were involved in a two-vehicle accident Saturday evening, Jan. 30, at the intersection of Alto and Park roads. We are so appreciative and want to thank all those who called 911, the people who let us sit in their car to stay warm, the EMTs, the ambulance personnel, the St. Joseph Hospital Emergency Department, Dr. Devaul, the state police, city and county police – and our loving children and family.
“We are so grateful to be alive. Don’t take one second for granted, because that one second would have made a difference in this letter. Thank you.”
Firm comes highly recommended
Judy Farrington of Kokomo sends this Cheer for a local business:
“I recently had extensive furnace duct work done by Thermodyn Heating and Air Condition Co. A new system had been installed several years ago by another company and proved to be a poor job.
“Thermodyn sent their technicians out to assess the work needed. Their technicians Matt and Paul handled the work in a timely fashion.
“After completion of the job, a few issues remained that I felt needed addressed. When I called the company, they immediately sent these fine technicians again, and they worked diligently to fix the problem to my satisfaction.
“I highly recommend this very reliable firm and have high regard for everyone involved in this company. I give a big thank-you to all for a job well-done.”
Tri Kappa: Thank you, Kokomo
Myra Sanburn of Kokomo sends this Cheer on behalf of the Tri Kappa Sorority:
“As Tri Kappa Week is being observed throughout Indiana on Feb. 21-27, it presents the opportune time for Kokomo’s Beta Lambda Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa to extend our sincere gratitude to Kokomo and the surrounding community for their support in the work of Tri Kappa.
“Because of the community’s investment in our annual projects, we are able to give back to the community by helping to meet some of the many needs in our midst. The funds received from our primary projects – the sale of nuts and cheese balls in the fall and chocolate cream eggs in the spring – go directory to provide eight area scholarships, including scholastic and fine arts awards, as well as other worthy causes.
“Tri Kappa is a philanthropic organization which promotes charity, culture and education through a variety of avenues. Its mission is to serve; and it is our aim to serve with integrity.
“We extend our gratitude also to Mayor Greg Goodnight for issuing a proclamation which proclaims Feb. 21-27 as the time of observance of Tri Kappa Week. Thank you again, Kokomo community, for joining us in this week of recognition and celebration. We salute you! God bless you all!”
BCR CPA: A fine business
Dale and Doris Updegraff send this Cheer for BCR CPA Group, on behalf of their grandson, Brian Updegraff.
“The BCR CPA Group has recently saved our grandson, Brian Updegraff, aggravation, time and also much money when he was scheduled to be deployed (for the eighth time) to the Persian Gulf area.
“They found errors in the state tax returns which had been prepared by a well-intentioned volunteer tax preparer. Brian was quite satisfied with the work BCR did for him and ready to pay the reasonable fee they normally charge.
“His bill was ... no charge!
“There are fine business people in Kokomo, and BCR CPA Group is among them.”
‘A community that gives back’
Damon Ashburn, general manager of Aaron’s Sales and Lease, Kokomo, sends this Cheer:
“On behalf of myself and the rest of the staff at Aaron’s Sales and Lease here in Kokomo, I would like to thank the Tribune, especially K.O. Jackson, and the numerous angels in the community.
“Since the story about our efforts to provide toys to the children of American soldiers, we have had a large number of people come in and drop off toys, most with nothing more than a smile and a thank you. The efforts in Kokomo have truly shown that we are still a community that gives back. Thank you, everyone.”

Karickhoff acted ‘cowardly’
The Rev. Robin Wentworth Mayer and Horst G. Mayer of Kokomo send the Jeer for state Rep. Mike Karickhoff’s silence during the “right-to-work” debate:
“Mr. Karickhoff, for someone who’s new to office, you’ve certainly learned the art of talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Karickhoff: Reason behind my ‘right-to-work’ vote
There is no doubt the “right-to-work” debate has brought mixed emotions, not only to our state but District 30 as well. There were only a handful of House Republicans who did not vote in support of this legislation. Let me explain why I felt it was necessary for me to vote in opposition to right to work.
