OUR VIEWFarm Safety 4 Just Kids program could save lives.

Accidents are an unfortunate byproduct of living and working on farms, so it’s important that kids begin to learn about safety at a young age.

The local chapter of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids and employees of ADM Grain of Logansport did their part last weekend by staging the second annual Barnyard Bootcamp on the Cass County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The goal of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids is to promote a safe farm environment to prevent health hazards, injuries and fatalities to children and youth.

Volunteers from Future Farmers of America, Cass County 4-H, Logansport Fire Department, Logansport Memorial Hospital and the Indiana Department of Transportation joined in by putting on 10 different presentations on farm safety.

Nearly 100 children from around the area participated in activities to learn about farm yard safety, the dangers of farm equipment and the consequences of accidents.

Participants learned about the dangers of grain bins, overhead power lines, working with combines and ATVs, as well as fire safety and healthy eating.

In one presentation, children wore vision impairing glasses, had their arms tied and used wheelchairs to learn what it would be like to suffer the loss of a limb in a farm accident.

As one of the youths attending the session said, “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in putting together this important event. The lessons they’re taught could very well save lives.
