Kokomo — Kokomo’s Creative Financial Designs (CFD) Saints men’s fastpitch softball team is making its final season one to remember.
The Saints won the ASA Indiana Men’s Open Fastpitch Tournament over the weekend at Darrough Chapel Park, and will fly out to Salem, Ore., on Wednesday to play in the “A” nationals.
The Saints opened the state tourney with an 8-5 victory over the DC Current from Bremen, then dropped a 15-13 decision to the Anderson Lawmen. After that, the Saints ran off four straight victories to capture the title. They beat the Kokomo Outlaws (15-5), the Indianapolis All-Stars (4-3), the Anderson Lawmen (3-2) and then the Lawmen again (18-9).
Ron Banush picked up three wins and Pernell McGregor and Tim Douglas recorded the other two wins. Kevin Connolly won the MVP trophy after rocking 10 hits including three home runs. Scott Sullivan, Ysidro Matos and Brent Owens added seven hits apiece and Brandon Boles and Douglas hit a home run and had four hits each.
The other members of the team are Robbie Wooley, Bill Cardwell, Ross Sullivan and Mark Carden.
The Saints have won four state championships since 2004. They have recorded more than 150 wins against just 16 losses during their seven-year run.
“It was nice for us to win our last state tournament together as a team,” said Owens, the Saints’ skipper. “We have had a lot of success and fun over these last seven seasons. It is sad to see this come to an end, but I feel we have created a lot of great memories.
“The thing I liked about our team over the years is that our players have consistently been Howard County products. Most other teams recruit from everywhere. Our players all come from Howard County and represent most of the local high schools. Hopefully, we will go out to Oregon and bring back an “A” national title to cap off a great seven-year run.”
The Saints have nationals experience. Last year, they finished fourth in the “A” nationals. In 2008, they won the “B” nationals.
