Kokomo — Northwestern’s boys golf team turned in a score of 169 to beat Eastern by 30 strokes Wednesday at Green Acres G.C.
The Tigers were led by their 1-2 punch of Ben-Marvin Egel and Drew Hansen. Egel won medalist honors with a 2-over 38 and Hansen followed with a 39.
Jeff Blankenberger (44) and Curtis Bretl (48) had the Tigers’ third and fourth scores and Jack Florea (50) and Zach Gabriel (51) rounded out their varsity lineup for Wednesday’s match.
“The Tigers are slowly improving and hopefully by [Mid-Indiana Conference tournament] time, we’ll be ready to show our true colors,” Northwestern coach Randy Lindgren said.
Lindgren is looking for a regular lineup to emerge.
“It’s kind of like we’re playing musical chairs. I have my 1 and 2 [spots] set and my [next seven players] all kind of just switch places. I need to be the musician to figure it out,” Lindgren said.
Noel Horvath fired a 39 for the Comets, but the Greentown gang failed to back Horvath’s score with other solid scores. The Comets’ second- and third-best scores were 50s from Scott Bolinger and Micah Detweiler.

Ben Meadows fired a 41 to win medalist honors and lead the Titans to the win at Fox Prairie G.C. John Fantuzzo (46), James Fantuzzo (47) and Andrew Shively (49) had the Titans’ other top scores.
“We’re hanging on with our scores right where we’ve been — much better than last year,” Taylor coach Frank Conner said. “We’re having a good time. I’d just like to see the scores just kind of turn down a little bit more. We’re just wanting to improve a little bit.”
SOFTBALL
Kokomo 15, Carroll 0, 5 innings
Led by Katie Owings and Christine Skaggs, the Wildkats rocked the visiting Cougars for 15 hits. Owings finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double and Skaggs went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double. Both players drove in six runs.
“It was really nice to see Katie to get those two home runs,” Kokomo skipper Lisa Tate said. “She’s been hitting the ball really hard lately, but kind of on top of it a little bit so it was great for her to make that adjustment in her swing. She really killed it [Wednesday].”
Tate noted Skaggs’ homer was her sixth of the season, a new school record.
Also for Kokomo (6-3), Carly Painter had a double and a single and Caroline Harbaugh belted a double.
Painter, Skaggs and Allie Cook pitched for the Kats. They combined on a one-hitter.
“Our pitchers did a nice job,” Tate said. “That was Allie’s first varsity [appearance] as a pitcher.”
Western 10, Frankfort 7
Sam Hemming scored four runs to help the Panthers improve to 8-1 on the season. She got on base with a triple, two singles and a walk. Also, Kate Johnson doubled, singled, scored three runs and drove in two.
The Hot Dogs scored three runs in the top of the first but the Panthers had an 8-3 lead after four innings, propelling starting pitcher Katie Daine to the victory. Brooke Pingleton threw the last nine outs for the save, giving up just one unearned run.
“I was a little bit concerned after the win against Taylor [Tuesday] night,” Western coach Jim Clouse said. “[Tuesday’s game] was a conference game, it was an emotional game, and I was worried about a letdown. We did not play very well, but we played well enough to win and we continued to hit the ball.”
GIRLS TENNIS
Eastern 5, Rossville 0
The Comets made quick work of the visiting Hornets.
In the singles matches, Carly Miles cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1, Vanessa Dove dropped just two games at No. 2 and Charissa Richards took a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3. Miles improved to 8-0 and Dove moved to 7-1.
In the doubles matches, Kayla Lamb and Jamie Burkholder posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 and Courtney Wisher and Emily Seagrave dropped just one game at No. 2.
“We were celebrating senior night and we had two seniors who got nice wins, Kayla Lamb at No. 1 doubles and Courtney Wisher at No. 2 doubles,” Eastern coach Pat Rice said. “It was a great team win — everybody took care of business pretty quickly.”
Eastern (5-3) plays Guerin Catholic today in a match that has been moved to Greentown.
Kokomo 4, Tipton 1
The Wildkats moved to 3-2 with a comfortable win at home. Alli Wray won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Fiona Gerber won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Abby Hemmeger and Ashley Lobeck cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. And Madi Waltemath and Kasie Hellmann won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
“As a team, top to bottom, we played probably the best we’ve played all year,” Kokomo coach Rob Leavitt said. “It kind of shows with some of the competition we’ve been playing the last couple weeks our girls have gotten a lot better within a two-week period, so it’s nice to see them grow each night.”
Taylor 4, Maconaquah 1
The Titans had to sweat out two difficult points on the road to secure their first MIC win of the season.
For the Titans, Isadora Bethlem won 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 singles, Amy Lipchik won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Courtney Schroeder and Rebecca Maack won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 doubles, and Taylor Fruth and Logan Kimbler won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
“I thought that the key to the match [was] we really got two pretty quick points at the 3 singles and 2 doubles, and then with 2 singles and 1 doubles both going into second-set tiebreaker, it could have gotten really tight if we lost those tiebreakers,” Taylor coach Dave Wise said. “So it was nice that the girls were able to finish off those tiebreakers and not have to go a third set, either one of them.”
Taylor improved to 4-4 overall, 1-2 in the MIC.
BASEBALL
No. 9 Kokomo 10,North Central 0, 6 innings
Colton Summers tossed a three-hitter, Nolan Sanburn and Devin Schacht rocked home runs and the Class 4A No. 9-ranked Wildkats rolled past the Panthers in Indianapolis.
Summers (4-0) struck out three and walked one.
“He was very efficient — he threw only 66 pitches in six innings,” Kokomo coach Steve Edwards said. “He had control of the game from the beginning to the end. His best inning was probably the last inning where he struck out two guys. He seemed to get stronger as the game went on. North Central had been hitting the ball pretty well coming into this game, but he moved the ball around, hit his spots, and really pitched well to the middle of their lineup.”
Sanburn belted a two-run homer in the third inning to help the Kats shake off a slow start. The Kats exploded for six runs in the sixth to win going away. Schacht smacked a grand slam to key the big inning.
Sanburn’s homer was his sixth of the season.
Also for Kokomo (11-1), Phillip Kuhns had a double and a single. He scored two runs and drove in a run.
Tri-Central 9, Clinton Central 6
Trailing 6-5, the host Trojans scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to top Hoosier Heartland Conference foe Clinton Central for the second straight night. That surge made relief pitcher Austin Horn the winner, rewarding him for three scoreless innings of work. He allowed just two hits while fanning four.
“He did a nice job, and for a freshman, pitched fairly well in kind of a tough situation,” TC coach Sean Swan said.
Josh Copp had a single, a double and three RBIs for the Trojans (5-7, 3-3 HHC). Blaine Pyke had two singles and two RBIs. Keegan Pyke and Kyle Dickover each scored twice.
“We didn’t play our best game, but found a way to get it done there at the end,” Swan said.
