“Krissy Durr, Corianne Myer and Kelsey Durr all ran really good races for us,” Western coach Heather Yentes said, “and then we were successful again because we were able to get that pack in there, getting third, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth. As long as we can continue to do that, then we should find success.”

“Amy had a good, solid 47. The other girls, I think, took a little step backwards,” Taylor coach George Phares said. “We go up to Dykeman [G.C. in Logansport] on Thursday and then we have conference on Saturday. We hope we can regroup, get back to where we were and push ahead a little bit.”
Co-medalist Alicia Laymon’s 47 led the Kings. Heather Fry (59), Hollie Boyles (62), Shelby Fry (62) and Haley Clark (65) rounded out their contingent.
BOYS SOCCER
Northwestern 7, Peru 0
The Purple Tigers fired in five goals in the second half to win going away.
“We seem to be playing very well in the second half of games,” Northwestern coach Jim Corcoran said.
Jimmy Corcoran scored three goals to lead the winners. Nolan Sanders and Peter Caven each offered a goal and an assist, John McCormick and Dalton Smallwood scored the other goals and Elliot Mervis chipped in an assist. Goalkeeper Graham Dennis needed to make just two saves in recording the shutout.
“We outshot them 37-2 — it was pretty dominating,” Jim Corcoran said. “Our defense is really rock solid. Obviously, with 37 shots, we’d hopefully make a few more, but I’m happy with the score.”
Northwestern (5-2, 3-0 MIC) visits Eastern Thursday.
Eastern 7, Taylor 1
The Comets scored five times after halftime to seal the victory after going into the break with a slim 2-1 edge. Paul Schiedler netted two goals for Eastern with Christopher Anderson, Kevin Conwell, Wes Horner, Wieland Bartels and Tim Price each scoring once. Chris Manfred set up two goals while Rusty Reed, David Manfred, Horner, Anderson and Conwell each had one assist. A.J. Childs had seven saves.
Eastern coach Mike Kantz was impressed with “Tommy Lott and the defense that he played. He’s just excelling. I definitely have to say Taylor’s the most disciplined and organized I’ve seen [in the last five seasons]. They’re just a different team. You can’t just get off the bus and beat them.”
Eastern (4-3, 2-0 MIC) hosts Northwestern Thursday.
Andrea Gilotti scored Taylor’s goal on an assist by Cody Scalf. Seth Stockdell had 14 saves.
“I’m proud of the boys, they continued to battle throughout the game,” Taylor coach Barry Akers said.
Taylor (0-7, 0-4 MIC) plays at Lakeview Christian Thursday.
Carroll 4, Twin Lakes 1
Chase Meade scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second half to lead the Cougars past the visiting Indians. Michael Myer, Justin Moffitt and Blake Seward recorded assists for the Cougars and ’keeper Cody Abdon made eight saves.
Carroll (7-1) visits Caston on Thursday.
Oak Hill 3, Western 1
Chris King scored a goal, but the Panthers otherwise had a forgettable performance.
“We struggled,” Western coach Mike Roe said. “We just did not pass the ball well at all and that really hurt us from the defensive phase all the way through attacking.”
Western (4-2-1) visits Tipton Thursday.
GIRLS SOCCER
Taylor 1, Western 0
Amber Doehrman got free for a goal in the second half to lift the Titans over the Panthers. Kylie Weeks preserved the victory with 15 saves in goal for Taylor, which improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIC ahead of a Thursday date at Maconaquah.
“They played us really tough,” Taylor coach John Piotrowicz said. “They were well-prepared for us and really won the field both halves. We were able to break loose with Amber coming out of the middle of the field. She has a good, hard kick and was able to put it in. I think we wore them down a little bit. Honestly [we had] a little bit of luck on our side. The ball just happened to bounce our way to keep them from scoring.”
Western lamented not getting a goal.
“It was a good match, back and forth,” WHS coach Sarah Brichford said. “We had a lot of opportunities to put the ball in the net, but we did not finish.
“Our defensive effort was very good by Jennfier Dale, Kim Grider and Alleca Kerker, and in the midfield by Maeghan Grove. All four of them played very well.”
VOLLEYBALL
Kokomo def. Northwestern 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-14
Both Kokomo (4-5) and Northwestern (3-7) left in on the court as the VolleyKats pulled the match out in four games.
“It seems to be a typical Kokomo-Northwestern volleyball match,” Kokomo coach Ron Byram said. “The first game Northwestern jumped all over us. The Tigers were up 11-3. We came back, and there were a lot of good plays on both sides.”
Shana Bowley and Jackie Filip each had 25 serve receptions and 15 digs to lead Kokomo. Abby Hemmeger contributed 11 kills and nine digs and Kelly Hopkins had 15 kills and three blocks. Other Kokomo contributors were Tricia Hatfield (12 kills), Whitney Weir (16 assists), Ashley Lobeck (15 assists) and Clarissa Woodard (two blocks).
“Hatfield had a great night hitting,” Byram commented. “Filip played a good game all the way around. She was one of our good defenders.”
Northwestern was led by Amy Harshman with six digs, four service points, including two aces, three kills and two solo blocks and one assisted block. Kylie Ballard added nine service points, including two aces, five digs, three kills and two solo blocks and four assisted blocks. Kat Lowden contributed with 13 serve receptions, eight service points, including two aces, and seven digs.
“We played them pretty tough, until the unforced errors came into play,” NW coach Marty Britten said. “We had nine unforced errors in the fourth game, and we also have problems communicating. We would have won a lot more games this year, if we would have communicated more. Individually, Ballard did an excellent job for us.”
H. Heights def. Taylor 26-24, 25-18, 25-7
Elyse Black recorded seven points and seven assists to lead the Titans, who pushed the Huskies in the first game, but faded over the rest of the match.
Also for the Titans, Bri Barnett offered four kills and five points (two aces), Liz Mamaril chipped in seven points (two aces) and two kills and Rebecca Maack had four kills.
“The big difference was that Heights was able to play at a high level consistently and we weren’t able to match their consistency,” Taylor coach Shane Vore said.
Tri-Central def. Rossville 25-20, 25-16, 25-15
Emily Ragan put together a well-rounded line of 10 digs, eight serve receptions, seven kills, and six service points to help the Trojans sweep the visiting Hornets in three games.
Also for the Trojans, Dallas Dalton had 16 assists, 14 digs, five points and four kills; Hannah Ray offered 12 points, 11 digs and four kills; Kelly Walter had eight kills and four blocks; Christa Rich served eight points; and Caili Thomas and Cami Thomas combined for 13 points and 19 serve receptions.
Tri-Central (5-7, 1-1 HHC) hosts Eastern Thursday.
Oak Hill def. Eastern 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19
Oak Hill dominated Eastern by winning three of the four games.
“We never showed up,” Eastern coach Meredith Cipriano said. “We won the second game because of Oak Hill making mistakes.”
Tribune sportswriters Kenny Hetzler, Bryan Gaskins and Pedro Velazco compiled this roundup.
