Drake, Shurn help Saint Francis advance
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Former Kokomo High School standout Kayla Drake hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points Wednesday morning to lead the University of Saint Francis women’s basketball team to a 62-42 victory over Reinhardt University of Georgia in the first round of the NAIA Division II tournament.
Another former Lady Kat, Skylarr Shurn had nine points and four steals. Drake added seven rebounds and three swipes as the Cougars improved to 31-3 on the season. The Cougars are one of the tourney’s No. 1 seeds.
Saint Francis moves on to the round of 16 where they’ll play St. Xavier University (25-6) at 1 p.m. Friday. It’s a rematch of a regular-season game where St. Xavier handed USF its first loss of the season, 78-61 in the championship game of the SXU holiday Tournament on Dec. 29.
“Oh yes, we remember [SXU] and we are looking forward to playing them again,” Drake said in a story on the USF website. “We did some good things [Wednesday], but we can play better than we did. We hadn’t played for over a week, so we wanted to give it our all. We didn’t want to leave early.”
Saint Francis held Reinhardt to just 23 percent shooting in the second half and forced 21 turnovers, including 14 steals.
