Once again we were led by Amy Lipchik with a 40. She continues playing outstanding golf.
“Emily Boyd, she’s been really consistent the last few matches,” Phares added. He pointed out that in her recent matches, Boyd shot an 88 over 18 holes (with matching 44s on each nine), then two straight 44s and finally a 45.

VOLLEYBALL
Western def. Tipton 25-20, 25-19, 25-14
The Panthers improved to 11-1 on the season with a three-game win at home. Sable Staller led Western with 20 kills, a dozen digs, and seven blocks (four solo, three assisted). Jessie Meeks had 33 assists and a dozen digs. Nicole Rogers had 10 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Taylor Ruch had 14 digs, five aces and five kills. Taylor Young had 15 digs and Sam Hemming had 10.
“Overall we did a good job picking up most of the [attacks] they threw at us,” Western coach Lindsay Reinking said. “They did hit some of our weak spots, something that we have to continue to work on, but I would say overall we did a good job with our serve receive. We’re still consistently strong with serve receive and strong with our serves, which were our weak points last year.”
BOYS TENNIS
Western 4, Eastern 1
The Panthers improved to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the MIC by sweeping the singles points in straight sets at Western.
Benji Fountain won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Matt Orr won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. And Tyler Lucas won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. In addition, Western’s Brandon Penning and Austin Lafollette beat Eastern’s Joel Coffman and Adam McKinney 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
“I’m really pleased. I thought our singles guys came out and played really strong,” Western coach Brandon Shawhan said. “Eastern had some solid singles guys that could really hit the ball pretty well and I thought we dug deep and put away some good points.
“Eastern has some solid doubles squads and I’m really pleased, especially with our No. 2 doubles going three sets. Our doubles guys stuck together and pulled out the third set. Our No. 1 doubles … even though we had a couple points we let go, I thought they played a strong match.”
Eastern won the No. 1 doubles point as Noel Horvath and Michael Dunkel beat Anderew Lindley and Raghav Haran 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a match that took approximately three hours. The Comets fell to 1-3, 0-2 MIC.
“I was happy with how my team played,” Eastern coach Andrew Miller said. “Even though the singles scores were lopsided I thought my guys competed hard and fought well. Doubles, obviously we had some long matches, three setters. I was proud that they both came back and won the second sets even though the team match was already decided.”
Mississinewa 4, Maconaquah 1
Ryan Frantz won the No. 2 singles match 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 6-4 for Maconaquah’s point at Ole Miss. Frantz is now 10-0 on the season. Maconaquah fell to 7-3 as a team.
“It was kind of disappointing,” Mac coach Tim Maiben said. “We really weren’t very competitive with them and I felt like we were sluggish and never got things going for us. I’m proud that Ryan pulled that out. He remains undefeated on the season.”
GIRLS SOCCER
Eastern 6, Maconaquah 0
The Comets built a 4-0 lead through the first 20 minutes of the match, and held the Braves shotless for the second time in as many days in a drubbing in Bunker Hill.
Northwestern held Maconaquah shotless in a 5-0 win Tuesday.
Savannah Rees netted two goals for Eastern (6-0, 3-0 MIC), Emileigh Conwell and Kelly Reed both scored goals, and Joy Sommers and Brittney Anderson added a goal and assist each to round out the Comet leaders.
With a key weekend ahead, Eastern coach Kevin Duggins was pleased with the way his team took control early.
“We have the biggest game in the history of our program coming up Saturday [against Hamilton Heights],” Duggins said. “And, getting an early lead [Wednesday] allowed us to see some more options and make changes for Saturday.”
