Andrean lands final punch in 5-OT battle with Cass

59ers’ kicking game is the difference.

WALTON — As Friday night’s epic, marathon game kept moving from one overtime session to another, it became apparent that Andrean couldn’t stop Cass from 10 yards out with four downs to go.

Unfortunately for the Kings, they couldn’t stop Andrean junior quarterback Matt DeSomer.

As each team kept matching each other with scores, it came down in the end to extra-point attempts. Cass had one to win it in the second OT session, but the kick was blocked. Andrean had one to win it in the fifth OT session, and it was good, lifting the Fighting 59ers to an unbelievable 67-66 win in five overtimes in a Class 2A regional game.

Andrean will host Fort Wayne Bishop Luers next Friday for a semistate game.

Andrean place-kicker Matt Anderson was 6-for-6 in extra point attempts, and he hit a 37-yard field goal in the final minute of regulation to force overtime. His game-tying field goal was an ugly line drive that somehow went through the uprights.

Cass place-kicker Marcus Hedrick was 2 of 5 in extra points, with his final two attempts blocked, one with 3:32 to go in the fourth quarter and one in the second overtime.

Cass’ best chance to stop Andrean in the overtime sessions came in the first one when Luke Knutson recorded a sack of DeSomer. But he was called for a controversial horsecollar penalty to negate the play.

DeSomer finished with 209 yards rushing and seven touchdowns and added 99 yards passing and two more TDs. Four of his 10 rushing attempts in the OT sessions went for touchdowns.

The Kings came back from a 28-12 halftime deficit to force overtime. They forced two fumbles and got their offense going in full gear.

It was a classic in which the Kings came up just short — similar to a 54-53 loss in two overtimes to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers in a 2009 regional.

Ball State once ranked among the best mid-major men’s basketball programs in the nation. The Cardinals rattled off 14 straight winning seasons and made five NCAA Tournament appearances from 1989-2002.
But since that run, Ball State has fallen into a state of mediocrity, with just two winning seasons in the last 11.
New coach James Whitford is confident the Cardinals are positioned for a return to prominence. Whitford was in Kokomo on Monday night to speak to a Ball State alumni outing at the Kokomo Country Club.
