Ind. bicentennial panel wants conservation ideas

Indianapolis — The Indiana Bicentennial Commission wants residents to suggest conservation projects around the state that can be completed by the time of the 200th anniversary of statehood in 2016.

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman announced the creation of the Bicentennial Nature Trust on Tuesday. She says the commission has set aside $20 million from various agencies to be used on the trail, park and wetland projects. The formal application process for the projects will open later.

Gov. Mitch Daniels first announced the nature trust in his State of the State address three weeks ago.

The state has increased the amount of public recreational lands by 44,000 acres since 2005.

Skillman and former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton are co-chairs of the Bicentennial Commission.
