Police say U.S. marshal, gunman shot in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne —

Authorities in Fort Wayne say a federal marshal was shot in the leg while officers were trying to arrest a man who opened fire on them.

Police say the officers shot and critically wounded the gunman during the confrontation late Monday at an apartment complex on the city’s southeast side.

Marshals Service spokeswoman Carolyn Gwathmey tells WANE-TV that the agent underwent surgery at a Fort Wayne hospital and the injuries aren’t considered life-threatening.

City Police Chief Rusty York tells The Journal Gazette that federal agents and city officers were at the complex with a federal arrest warrant, but didn’t release details about it.

York says the wounded man was hospitalized in critical condition.
