Judge rules against Purdue in ex-chancellor's suit

Fort Wayne — A judge has ruled that Purdue University cannot claim attorney-client privilege as a reason to prevent disclosure of a report into former Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne chancellor Michael Wartell's ouster from his post.

Wartell was forced out at IPFW in 2011 under a Purdue policy that requires university executives to retire at age 65. The Journal Gazette reports that Wartell has sued the university, claiming discrimination and harassment.

He's demanding a copy of a report into his ouster prepared by independent investigator John C. Trimble. Wartell's attorneys say the former chancellor didn't know Trimble was also an attorney for Purdue. Wartell says he was led to believe Trimble was truly an independent third-party investigator.

Purdue claims Trimble served appropriately as both the school's attorney and third-party investigator.
