GREENWOOD (AP) — Residents and business owners in a central Indiana county could soon have to pay a fine if they call 911 without a good reason or their security alarms go off when there isn't an emergency.
The Daily Journal reports Greenwood has proposed fining property owners $50 if police have to make repeated runs for false alarms or false 911 calls.
Chief John Laut says he proposed the fine after a review showed police spend about $100,000 each year responding to false alarms but only about $500 responding to alarms where a crime was taking place.
Laut says fines won't be levied for alarms set off during storms.
People who repeatedly call 911 when they don't have an emergency also would face fines.
