Ind. senator changes tactic on school standards

Indianapolis — A state senator who has sought to pull Indiana from a national education initiative is now dialing back that effort.

Republican Sen. Scott Schneider of Indianapolis tells The Associated Press that he expects the Senate Education Committee to vote Wednesday on a proposal to suspend implantation of the Common Core State Standards while the State Board of Education holds new hearings on what should be included in Indiana standards.

Schneider says the Board of Education would then decide by year's end whether to change the standards.

The board in 2010 approved joining the set of uniform math and reading benchmarks that was developed by a national group of state school officials and has been adopted by 45 states.
