Oil search starting around Indiana State campus

Terre Haute — Crews are starting a search for oil around the Indiana State University campus.

University officials say seismic testing around the Terre Haute campus is beginning Friday and will continue for about a week. That work involves large "shaker trucks" and other testing devices, leading to some lane closures on streets around the campus and the city's downtown.

University spokesman Dave Taylor tells the Tribune-Star that contractors will use the vibrating equipment to help find underground pools.

Numerous oil wells are in operation around the Terre Haute area and a large discovery near the city last year contributed to Indiana's oil production hitting a 10-year high in 2011.
