ACLU seeks release of woman jailed for cursing

Niles, Mich. — The American Civil Liberties Union is asking a judge in southwest Michigan to order the release of an Indiana woman jailed for cursing or to dismiss the case.

WOOD-TV reports an emergency appeal was filed Friday in Berrien County Circuit Court on behalf of 49-year-old LaRue Ford.

Ford was charged with contempt after district court clerks overheard her using profanity while trying to settle an issue related to a 2004 traffic ticket.

An ACLU attorney said Ford "essentially muttered a swear word to herself" on Dec. 4 as she was leaving the clerk's office in Niles, just north of the Indiana state line.

Ford was later charged with contempt and jailed Dec. 18 after her bond was revoked because she could not show a permanent address in Indiana.
