Ind. court orders man's removal from sex registry

Indianapolis — The Indiana Supreme Court has ordered that a Hammond man's name be removed from the state's sex offender registry.

The Times of Munster reports Thursday's ruling says a state law requiring 52-year-old Andre Gonzalez to register for life imposes an unconstitutional retroactive punishment.

Gonzalez pleaded guilty to child solicitation in 1997 for seeking to have sex with a 9-year-old girl and was required by a 1996 law to register as a sex offender for 10 years. But a 2006 change to Indiana law required adult sex offenders who victimized children younger than 12 to register for life.

Gonzalez argued in his appeal that extending his registration period from 10 years to life was an additional retroactive punishment barred by the Indiana Constitution, and the state's high court agreed.
