Heavy rains, high winds, record warmth visit Ind.

Indianapolis — A storm system pushing across the Midwest has brought Indiana strong thunderstorms packing winds of up to 65 mph amid unseasonably warm temperatures.

The National Weather Service reports overnight storms with winds in excess of 50 mph swept across much of the state. The highest reported gusts were 65 mph winds in south-central Indiana's Monroe and Morgan counties.

The storms also dumped heavy rains as high winds knocked down trees and power lines. Duke Energy reports that about 5,000 of its central and southern Indiana customers are without power.

Before the storms arrived in Indianapolis, the state capital set a new record high of 65 degrees shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday. The weather service says the previous record for the day was 64 degrees, set in 1947.
