Possible grenade removed from Frankfort store

Frankfort —

A bomb squad removed a possible hand grenade after a central Indiana police chief says it was placed on the counter of a liquor store.

Police shut down a main street through Frankfort for more than an hour until the object was removed Monday night from Ye Olde Spirit Shoppe.

Police Chief Troy Bacon tells the Journal & Courier that a 51-year-old man took out the object and put it on the counter, after which a clerk hit the store’s panic button. Bacon says the man didn’t make any threats.

Bacon tells WLFI-TV that a decision on criminal charges against the man will be made after the Tippecanoe County bomb squad determines whether the object is an explosive device.
