Ind. lawmakers continue budget preparations

Indianapolis —

Members of the State Budget Committee continue their vetting of spending requests ahead of January's legislative session.

The panel was set to meet Tuesday morning to hear from the State Budget Agency and consider requests from the Supreme Court, Indiana State Police and Department of Correction.

Senate Appropriations Chairman Luke Kenley has told university leaders who've appeared before the panel they might need to tighten their belts through another two-year budget as questions remain about Indiana's tax collections and the state of the economy.

Budget writers head into 2013 with roughly $2 billion in cash reserves and pent-up spending requests from state agencies from the last five years or so. They will also weigh a proposal from Gov.-elect Mike Pence to cut the personal income tax.
