Super Bowl

February 1, 2012

Cheap or free Super Bowl activities

Kokomo — We know. The game is in our own backyard, but with tickets as expensive as they are, we also know few of us from Kokomo will get the chance to see the gridiron in person on Super Bowl Sunday.

That doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of all the Super Bowl action — without breaking the bank.

We’ve compiled our favorite free — or nearly free — activities for you during the build up to the most exciting game of the year.

Come along with us as we check out the amazing things to do throughout the week in Super Bowl Village and Indianapolis.

The stars

Emmy-award winning Zuri Hall will serve as the on-stage emcee in the Super Bowl Village as well as host for “Village TV.” Comedian and Super Bowl ambassador Mike Epps will also make special appearances throughout the week.

The zipline

You’ve got the chance to fly high over the streets of Indianapolis as a four-line zipline will run tandem down Capitol Avenue. It is the longest temporary zipline in the United States. Tickets will be sold on-site daily, and the cost is $10.

Tailgate Town

This is a football fan’s dream with tailgate competitions and football turf offering interactive game playing.

FanDome

A 360-degree inflated dome with full-body gaming will be up and running at the Kinect NFL PLAY 60 FanDome. Kinect for Xbox 360 responds to body movement so there’s no need for controllers — your body IS the controller.

Super Dash

Super Dash, two human-powered wheels, one dedicated to each fan base of the competing Super Bowl teams, operate similar to a hamster wheel. The project is sponsored by nonprofit Global Inheritance, and each day, the top 100-yard dash scores will be announced. On Super Bowl Sunday, the division that generated the most energy will be crowned champion.

Ice sculptures

Randy Finch and Derek Maxfield from the Food Network’s show “Ice Brigade” will do live ice sculpting performances. There’s not much cooler than that. (Get it? Cooler!)

ESPN Broadcast Studio

Throughout the week, more than 110 hours of television coverage, as well as ESPN Radio shows and other related content will be produced at Pan Am Plaza from Monday through Saturday. These shows will be open for public viewing throughout the week. Some of ESPN’s most popular shows broadcasting from Pan Am Plaza includes:

• Mike & Mike in the Morning

• SportsCenter

• SportsNation

• NFL Live

• NFL32

• A special four-hour edition of Sunday NFL Countdown on Super

Bowl Sunday.

The cars

On display will be 33 IndyCars, the symbol of Indianapolis, which have been transformed into symbols of each of the 32 NFL teams and the Super Bowl itself. The number on the car represents the year the franchise joined the NFL.

Super Bowl Roman Numerals

Get your picture taken with the iconic 30-foot Super Bowl Roman numerals, first seen during the 2008 Super Bowl in Arizona. The numerals were placed on Tuesday on Monument Circle and remain there throughout the Super Bowl week.

The exhibits

National Art Museum of Sport at University Place-IUPUI, 850 W. Michigan St., will celebrate the great athletes and moments of the game of football at NAMOS’ Football Invitational exhibit. The exhibit will celebrate the fine art depictions of professional, collegiate and pick-up football.

LeRoy Neiman is likely the best-known name in sport art and one of the most popular artists of all time. He began as an artist during childhood with sketches while playing on the playground at school and went on to win his first national art competition in the 6th grade. Neiman has been telling stories with his artwork ever since. Neiman said, "I am pleased to participate in the Football Invitational at the National Art Museum of Sport. I have selected "Hand Off,” a serigraph from my archives showcasing Super Bowl III."

Internationally renowned 3-D pop artist Charles Fazzino, known in the sports world for his works for Super Bowls XXXV-XLV, World Cup Soccer, MLB All-Star Games, Belmont Stakes, Indy 500, NHL All-Star Game and the United States Olympic Team, will include several pieces of his world famous pop-art for the Football Invitational.

For more information, visit www.namos.iupui.edu. There will also be handfuls of national and local artists’ work on display at well. For more information, visit www.namos.iupui.edu.

And if that wasn’t enough, historic downtown buildings will showcase local artists on their own “turf.” Super Bowl artistry will extend off the field and into an Indy landmark as the Indianapolis Downtown Artists and Dealers Association, presents Turf, a presentation of experiential art and design. This presentation of 20 juried artists will be displayed just 1,700 yards from Lucas Oil Stadium, in the old Indianapolis City Hall building at the corner of Alabama and Ohio Streets. It is slated to become the IDADA Art Pavilion, a public space where selected artists will have installation of their works. The IDADA Art Pavilion is free and open to the public daily.
